Equal-Sums Strips Magic Square Generator

Orders 8-108 * Strips: 2x3, 3x4, 2x5, 4x7, etc.

Created by Inder J. Taneja

Options

Verified constructions using 1 through n² exactly once. Smaller rectangular strips are used wherever verified: 2x3, 3x3, 3x4, 2x5, 2x7, and other suitable divisions. Wider strips remain only for orders where this collection has no smaller verified construction. Every row, column and both diagonals share the magic sum; every rectangular strip has the same total.

Magic rectangles. Entries marked “magic rectangles” are built so that, in addition, every strip is itself a magic rectangle: all its rows have one common sum and all its columns have one common sum (the row sum and the column sum are different numbers unless the strip is square). Entries marked “equal columns” are used where equal row sums inside a strip are arithmetically impossible: every strip has the same total and all its columns have one common sum. The remaining entries have equal strip totals only.

Strip verification

These checks concern the total of each strip. Individual rows and columns inside a strip may have different sums.

For any order n and strip size h×w, see which sums are arithmetically possible when the entries come from 1 to n².
